Nanas' Land: "Arrunge" (Morning Star) N.T. Australia.
Roaming Anmatyerr Women
We are sisters from the Anmatyerr Tribe. Our tribe speaks the Anmatyerr language which is only a spoken language and in recent times has been recorded into a written format by the tribe for historical referrence and teaching the young ones. As artists, we have been trained by our family members through the traditional methods. To preserve the authenticity of the art methods, each person must be formally trainined by a family member who has undergone the same training before them. This starts in childhood through sand stories and continues into adulthood, painting alongside a trained family member. Only when your mentor gives their blessing are you permitted to produce your own art; however, you must retain and respect the style and methods of your mentor.
As Anmatyerr Women, we respect and understand the culture and community of all those we share with on our journey through this big country. As roaming artists we try to get home to country to see our Nanas and family as much as possible.
Our Country
This is our Nanas' station, locally known as "Garden Bore". To us, we call it "Arrunge" which means Morning Star.
This name was chosen by our Nanas. After they received the land; they were both sitting together with other family members enjoying the sunrise and gazed upon "Arrunge" - the word for Morning Star in the Anmatyerr language.
The heart pin is where our station, "Arrunge", is located in the Anmatjerr country.
Most people know Alice Springs. "Arrunge" is almost 240km from Alice Springs which takes about 3-4 hours to drive depending on the weather.
Our country is large and has many remote communities.
It can take a while to visit all of our family members in each community.
